First, all securities are divided into 2 large groups: primary and secondary.
Primary (or principal) securities are always backed by certain assets and give their owners some rights over these assets. For example, stocks, bonds, cheques, bills, etc.
Secondary (or derivative) securities are always linked to primary (underlying) assets and give certain rights to their owners with respect to the underlying assets. Most often - the right to buy or sell them at a certain price. For example, futures, forwards, options, warrants, etc.
Documentary securities are actual paper with different types of security on which the main parameters and characteristics are applied.
Uncertified securities are issued in electronic form, all their characteristics are stored in special electronic registers.
Most modern securities are unproven.
And, finally, the securities may be immediate or indefinite, according to the maturity of the securities.
